Notes on early rank titles with weapon arm and/or branch of service designations
It was intended at first that generals should have the designations of their weapon arm and/or branch of service added to their rank title, e.g. Generalmajor der Artillerie, Generalmajor der Pioniere, Generalleutnant der Flieger, Generaloberst der Panzer, Generalmajor des Ingenieur-technischen Dienstes, Generalmajor des Medizinischen Dienstes, Generalleutnant des Intendantendienstes. Something similar applied to the admirals to differentiate those who held positions as Admirale des Ingenieur-Schiffs-Dienstes (Ing.) and in the Küstenschutzes (KS). These designations did not become generally accepted in this form, so that the additives were omitted in the following years. See Blechschmidt, von Lenski, Walther, Wulz and Zorn; when granted the rank of Generalmajor on 1 Oct 1952, these officers carried the short-lived weapon arm/branch of service designations with their rank titles. Other officers known to have carried the early weapon arm/branch of service designations included Generalmajor des Intendantendienstes (later Generalleutnant) Walter Allenstein and Generalmajor der Flieger (later Armeegeneral) Heinz Keßler.
Notes on other former Wehrmacht Generals in the German Democratic Republic
Generalmajor Martin Lattmann (10 Feb 1896-11 Aug 1978) was captured at Stalingrad on 2 Feb 1943 while commanding the 14. Panzer-Division. He entered the German Volkspolizei in 1952 and served from 1953-1956 as stellvertretender Chef für Panzerwesen in der Fachverwaltung Motorisierung/MdI with the rank of Chefinspekteur der VP. Lattmann did not hold rank in the KVP/NVA; his service was entirely with the civil police of the DVdI/MdI. NOTE: Die Generale des Heeres, 1921-1945, Band 7 (Knabe-Luz) gives his rank as Generalmajor der VP (1953) which appears to be incorrect as this rank was not introduced until 1957. After his service in the Volkspolizei, Lattmann held the following government posts:
1956: Leiter der Hauptabteilung Industrieanlagen/Export im Ministerium für Schwermaschinenbau der DDR.
1958: Mitarbeiter der Staatlichen Plankommission.
1958: auch stellvertretender Vorsitzender der Arbeitsgemeinschaft ehemaliger Offiziere.
Two former Luftwaffe generals served in the early police organs of the DDR: Generalmajor Arthur Brandt and Generalmajor Hans von Weech. Neither held rank in the KVP/NVA; their service was entirely with the civil police of the DVdI/MdI.

Although Generalmajor Kurt Haehling (7 Nov 1897-20 May 1993) did not join the armed organs of the German Democratic Republic, he settled there after his release from captivity in 1951. He was active in politics serving as Vorsitzender des National-Demokratische Partei Deutschlands (NDPD) Bezirksverbands Dresden from 1953-1960.

Notes on a Police General
Generalmajor der VP Paul Ludwig (5 Oct 1910-2 Oct 1992) is not included in NVA roster as the Deutsche Grenzpolizei did not fall under military command of the MfNV until 15 Sep 1961. Thus, Ludwig’s tenure of service was entirely with the civil police. However, he is included here as a matter of interest.
1932: Joined the German Communist Party (KPD).
1933: Immigrated to Czechoslovakia.
1937-1939: Served in the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War; interned in France after the war.
1941-1943: Sentenced to three years’ imprisonment in Germany.
1943-1944: Served in Strafbataillon 999 in Greece and Albania.
1944-1945: Deserted to the Albanian partisans; antifascist training in the USSR.
10 Aug 1945: Joined the East German Police.
1945-1949: Leader of the Volkspolizeikreisamt Bernau and, afterwards, stellvertretender Abteilungsleiter in the Hauptabteilung Eisenbahnpolizei.
1949-1957: Chef der Landesbehörde and then the Bezirksbehörde der Deutschen Volkspolizei in Mecklenburg and then in Bezirk Rostock.
1957-1960: Chef der Deutschen Grenzpolizei.
1960-1967: Leader of the Transportpolizei der DDR.
